It was an arranged marriage of companies like California Heat Pump and Friedrich ClimateMaster. Starting with this basis of experience allowed them a head start on the competition.

Unlike a lot of HVAC industry professional, Ellis didn't start his early career as an HVAC technician or company manager. Instead, Ellis was involved in the energy efficiency movement of the 1970's and 80's. Heating and cooling didn't lead Ellis to geothermal heat pumps, but their ability to reduce household energy consumption did.
As a co founder of WaterFurnace International, Ellis was critical in developing closed-loop geothermal heat pump systems able to operate without access to groundwater sources. As Ellis realized, it wasn't the groundwater that made a geothermal heat pump efficient, but the ground heat. Closed-loop installation made geothermal heat pumps viable for markets all over the country not just in areas with big aquifers.
Hard predictions are, of course, impossible to make, but a rapidly industrializing globe means energy prices seemed poised for continual escalation. In this new market environment energy efficient technologies like geothermal heat pumps will become more and more important, and more and more cost effective.
